The definition, in detail

Definition

Attackers are trying the account.

Example

A payroll administrator's account logs 60 failed sign-ins overnight from addresses the identity provider tags as a botnet.

How it is measured

Person
Event

Provenance
Verizon DBIR

How it is used

Programs count "Targeted by malicious login attempts" per person from Identity provider & MFA and read it beside the other Identity and access signals; it feeds 0 cohorts, 2 sequences and 1 breach scenario.

A "targeted by malicious login attempts" record is evidence of what reaches the person (the threat side of the model). It says nothing on its own about what the person did.
