Malware detected on their device

A Threat signal from endpoint protection (EDR, malware.detected): malicious code was found on a device this person uses.

Classification

Risk domain One of 9 areas of human risk, from social engineering to readiness and response. Every signal belongs to one.
Dimension Every signal answers one of 3 questions.
Subject Who or what a signal is about: person, AI agent, vendor and organization.
Evidence level
Maturity practices One capability a program performs, scored on its own: See, Understand, Act, Prove, Govern and Culture.
Leads to The kind of breach the evidence beneath it points toward, each anchored to a Verizon DBIR or VERIS pattern or an FBI IC3 category.

The definition, in detail

Definition

The threat has already reached their device, so they sit at Exposed for the 90-day threat window.

Example

A sales engineer opens a cracked design tool from a file-sharing site; the endpoint agent flags a trojan and the SOC gets a ticket with her name on it.

How it is measured

Subject
Person
Event
malware.detected
Provenance
Verizon DBIR

How it is used

Programs count "Malware detected on their device" per person from Endpoint protection and read it beside the other Endpoint and device signals; it feeds 0 cohorts, 0 sequences and 1 breach scenario.

A "malware detected on their device" record is evidence of what reaches the person (the threat side of the model). It says nothing on its own about what the person did.
